Before you start saving, it’s best to calculate monthly income and expenses. The easiest way to do this is to use a spreadsheet (Google Sheets, Microsoft Excel, etc.) which automatically records all the amounts.

First, you need to write down all your household income for a few months, i.e. salaries, scholarships, lottery tickets, and any other money that regularly comes into your household budget. The second challenge is to record all expenses, even the smallest ones.

An important tip for saving money is to state the purpose for which you are saving money. These can range from small goals, such as a trip or a new television set, to larger goals, such as an apartment, funds for the children’s education, or an investment. It is important that this objective be relatively measurable and quantified.

For example, I plan to reserve €50,000 for a new car. To achieve this, I decide to save 1000 euros each month thanks to an automatic transfer from my current account to my savings account. This objective will be achieved in 50 months, i.e. 4 years and 2 months. I thus avoid paying for a car on credit which would have cost me much more.

Buy less and serve smaller portions at meals. This affects not only the finances of the house, but also the health of all members of the household. Also try not to waste food. Throwing away stale bread also affects your savings. After all, you can use it by softening it in breadcrumbs.

Using public transport is also a way to save money. If you live a few miles from your place of work, you can choose a bicycle rather than a car in the spring, summer and fall. It’s definitely a healthier solution for your body and the environment.

The truth is that we clutter our apartments. We collect things, which we intend to use in the future. I repeatedly found myself with no idea what was in my cupboards.

Too many items in my possession make me forget what I have. I’ve come up with a plan myself to get rid of things I don’t need. Therefore, I systematically put up for sale and share with my friends what I don’t need.
