Should we invest in premises dedicated to dialysis?

Dialysis is a method of removing electrolytes from colloidal solutions using a semi-permeable membrane. In other words, this operation removes water and waste from the body that the kidneys can no longer handle, due to a dysfunction. Dialysis allows you to restore metabolic balance by removing a number of toxic compounds from the blood. With the multiplication of the number of people suffering from kidney problems, a question arises: should we invest in premises dedicated to dialysis?

The kidney is a paired organ located in the abdominal cavity in the retroperitoneal space. It is an organ that performs mainly an excretory function, therefore it is responsible for the elimination of harmful metabolic products in the urine. Additionally, the kidneys also regulate blood pressure, affect acid-base balance, and regulate body fluid volume.

However, there are unfortunately situations in which the kidneys do not work properly. Interstitial nephritis and various types of tubulopathies, as well as glomerulonephritis, can contribute to impaired kidney function and dysfunction. All of these diseases can unfortunately lead to chronic kidney disease, i.e. chronic kidney failure.

Dialysis, or kidney replacement therapy, removes harmful waste products and water from the body that cannot be removed by defective kidneys. Through dialysis, various types of toxic compounds are also removed from our body. Dialysis can be done in dialysis centers such as those of the SCPI Primovie of Primonial or at home.

The first type of dialysis is hemodialysis. Patients usually do it three times a week and lasts about four to five hours. Preparing a patient for hemodialysis involves creating vascular access at an early stage, preferably an arteriovenous fistula on the upper limb. The second type of dialysis is peritoneal dialysis. The patient preparing for it must have a catheter implanted in the peritoneal cavity.

Dialysis is a life-saving operation for patients with kidney failure. The patient must travel 3 times a week to a dialysis center for dialysis. Home dialysis exists, but it is too expensive for the vast majority of patients. They must therefore travel 3 times a week and stay in the center for at least 5 hours.

If the center is very far from the patient’s home, getting dialysis will quickly become a nightmare for the patient, because to the 5 hours needed for dialysis, you have to add the long car journey. Investing in premises dedicated to dialysis will improve the quality of life of patients who will no longer have to travel hundreds or even thousands of kilometers to receive treatment, without which they risk dying in a few weeks.

Such an investment is also very profitable, given the increasing number of people suffering from chronic kidney disease. Since care is reimbursed by social security, a room dedicated to dialysis is therefore a very safe and profitable investment in the medium term.
